Fall of 2017 was a productive one and I'm thankful to have the freezer stocked with good meat for the family. No bucks for me this year which is fine - getting the job done is what matters most.
This season was extra special because it was the first time I have ever taken a deer with a rifle - it's always been my bow! I did research for years on rifles, calibers, ammo and scopes and finally bought exactly what I wanted over the summer so that I was ready and sighted-in once the season came.
November 24, 2017 - Evening Hunt
Sunset: 4:15 PM
Last Light: 4:35 PM
I shot the doe around 4:15pm. Usual scene - I was in my cedar tree stand. Three 3 does came from back-right corner of the forest and walked towards me and to my left. I had a pretty good shot in front of me but as the hunters nerves set it, I realized after I had put the deer in my crosshairs and I went to pull the trigger that my safety was on! I quick took the safety off but by that time the deer was behind trees. I sat down and waited patiently for the deer to continue on the trail towards my left. Having past experience, I had about a 75% chance of them coming to the spot I needed them to be for one last opportunity.
The shot was an easy 20 yards once she got into another opening. She moved no more than 10 ft. before she was down - perfect shot into the heart. Clean and quick.
Overall, another fantastic hunt and one that game me conficence with my new rifle. It was a beautiful 55 degree day. Prior in the week it was either cold or windy and did not see much activity.
